The Whole Story
Built like a temple rising from the hills behind Nusa Dua, Amanusa is that rare combination: a monumental hotel that still manages to be personable and endearing. There is a timelessness to its appeal that transcends the traditional notion of luxury. This is a luxury of beauty, appropriateness and sensitivity as opposed to excess.
Nusa Dua is blessed with Bali’s most beautiful beach , and Amanusa is situated within walking distance of it. The fact that the property also borders a beautifully crafted golf course is a bonus. Normally the proximity of a golf course would not feature as a plus, but in the case of Amanusa the golf course adds to the setting as a result of some inspired landscaping.
Amanusa was Ed Tuttle’s first project in Bali, and he brought a contemporary sense of the monumental to the architecture, in particular the public spaces. By evoking the forms of some of the more famous Hindu temples on the island, the bar and one of the restaurants for example are built on top of temple-like structures which provide stunning views of the nearby beach and the ocean beyond. Then in terms of guest villas, he chose to mimic the layout of a traditional Balinese village.
Tucked away along beautifully landscaped narrow stone-clad pathways, the guest villas are immaculate bungalows with stone floors, four poster beds, loft like spaces and some even have private swimming pools.
The main swimming pool is like the architecture; monumental and impressive. An enormous stone-tiled green basin that links the various towers that form the public areas.
Perched on a temple-like structure, the restaurant overlooks the golf course and the massive pool on one side, and the beach on the other. From its raised position, the view is a panorama of surrounding treetops and the Indian Ocean in the near distance. From a guest’s perspective, it is enhanced by the fact that it is a permanent fixture of the bar and restaurant ie the only way you can eat in the restaurant and drink in the bar and not be exposed to this extraordinary view is to close your eyes.
Monumental view, kick-ass beach and stunning golf course.
