The Whole Story

Hinduism first travelled to Bali more than five centuries ago and over time the island's spirituality has developed into a uniquely Balinese brand of Hinduism. Bali's spirituality is a big part of its attraction – the way people live and pray is linked with an extraordinary aesthetic sensibility. The Balinese are fastidious about their temples, and what they wear to temples is elaborately decorative and colour-coded. Every shrine, no matter how small, benefits from intense personal attention: all statues are ritually presented with food, clothing and song.  Spirituality is a lifestyle, and one that is grounded in the Balinese village.  In Ubud, the people still feel a strong sense of community and have thus retained the emotively colourful spectacle of the Balinese faith. In addition to the village's longstanding reputation as a centre of fine arts, it is Ubud's active, aesthetically spectacular spirituality that is one of its biggest drawcards. Whatever time of year you visit, you will probably find that there's a celebration, parade or festival that you are welcome to observe and even take part in.
The concept behind Uma Ubud is to offer a contemporary environment imbued with local ingredients so that the guest feels simultaneously at home and somewhere new.  The long established traditions and signature ingredients of Ubud, such as villas with roofs thatched in alang alang grass, which cascade down a valley towards a river; lofty, open pavilions constructed in teak pillars; frangipani trees and flagstone paths on green lawns, combine to create the core of the hotel’s visual impact.
The design approach was to create a contemporary setting that surprises with sophisticated subtlety rather than brazen boldness.  The new-generation, Isamu Noguchi-style lamps, the pale, lime-washed interiors, the polished black bathrooms, the spill pool that forms a wall of water for pedestrians below, the massive stone sculpture that separates the reception from the pool... all of these aesthetic factors have much more to do with refinement than innovation. And that's what makes Uma so perfect for Ubud. Not only is it in tune with its location; it's also in tune with its spirit.
