The Whole Story
The most puzzling thing about the ruins of Angkor is how little survives of the day-to-day existence of the people of the Khmer Empire, which flourished for over five hundred years and at its height covered the whole of present-day Cambodia and most of Thailand. In the twelfth century, this temple complex was serviced by almost thirteen thousand monks and its maintenance required the toil and produce of another eighty thousand in the various villages that belonged to it.
La Résidence d’Angkor, in the heart of the small but pretty tree-lined town of Siem Reap, is an exotic, dark-wooden-panelled escape from the heat and bustle of the outdoors. The guest rooms have the luxury of space, with bathrooms the size of an average Paris hotel room. The decor combines and earthy Asian signatures with a contemporary flourish. Then there’s the pool: a sumptuous 130-foot-long stretch of emerald green tiles with two Hindu-inspired fountains.
That’s the point of Angkor. You go there to marvel at the engineering feats of the Khmer Empire, to consider the sheer number of magnificent temples they constructed and the complexity of the waterworks they created on such a major scale.
