The Whole Story
Think of Jamaica and then think of three words; I bet they are sun, sea and music… at least they should be. Of all the Caribbean islands, Jamaica has the most distinct culture. Jamaicans call it a nation, not an island. Music is as much a part of this nation as its mountains, beaches and jungle. Combine all these attributes, condense them, and you end up with Geejam, possibly the most Jamaican of all retreats in Jamaica.
Set in the jungle on the secluded and unspoilt northeast coast, Geejam is a stone’s throw from the island’s most beautiful and charming beaches, and only a short journey from the island’s most renowned waterfalls. Geejam is an exclusive collection of deluxe cabins and villas with the added street cred of also being a fully fledged recording studio. Gwen Stefani of No Doubt even gave the village that borders Geejam, a tiny charming hamlet called Drapers, a plug at the 2003 Grammies. Musicians need privacy when they are recording an album, but they also need comfort and inspiration, and that’s where Geejam has earned its stripes.
Organic elegance best describes the style of this six acre estate. The centrepiece is a duo of three hundred year old fig trees that also serve as the foundation of the Bushbar. It’s all a well balanced mix of upscale interiors – Hansgrohe taps, Starck bathtubs – natural environment with groves of exotic trees and the “we know how to chill” shabby chic that has come to typify the Island Outpost group.
The most unusual aesthetic of Geejam must be the mix of lush greens with shades of turquoise and blue. You get the jungle and the sea all wrapped up in one convincing package. The property even has its own waterfall and the daydream canopy deck is the best place to enjoy its cascade. With names like Ska, Mento, Rocksteady, Drum&Bass and Sanwood, this retreat openly celebrates its musical pedigree and the design only amplifies it, with hidden speakers and the fusion of sleek design and home-grown tropical attitude.
It’s a potent mix, apparently even for rockstars. Grace Jones recently wrote in the guest book; “I came, I saw, you conquered (me).”
The Rooms
The accommodation at this unique collection of vistas, views, beaches, garden, jungle and recording studios consist of seven double rooms in three cabins, and one suite as well as a self-contained three bedroom villa. In contrast to the authentic rootsy tropical architecture of the public areas, the rooms use sleek design to juxtapose with the dominant natural beauty. A mesmerising mix of private steam rooms, patios with hammocks, panoramic views, jacuzzis on viewing decks, oversized bathrooms and a Pop Art and photography collection.
