The Whole Story

Just what is it about Round Hill that makes it such a magnet, particularly for people utterly spoilt for choice? A significant part of the equation is Jamaica itself. Jamaicans will remind you that they are a nation, not just an island; a nation of three million, with cities and highways and crime and shopping centres and its own very particular culture. Jamaicans are open, friendly, very laid back and have a wicked sense of humour. One thing they are not is remotely impressed by fame and celebrity. After fifty years, Round Hill has a million stories to tell. But the most impressive is how little it has changed. In a world obsessed with technology and driven by built-in obsolescence, it’s exciting to come across a place that savours its uncomplicated authenticity. There’s nothing flash about Round Hill and there never has been. The place today offers the same blend of qualities that has always pulled the famous names and faces; namely a well-reserved slice of old Jamaica, with sympathetic architecture and a predictably colonial pace of life. Having Noel Coward as his first client was a huge coup for Pringle and it opened the floodgates. So much so that one American magnate agreed to buy a plot on the basis of a photo for the price of £25,000, enough to finance all the real estate in one hit.
