The Whole Story
Hidden in the small village of Playa Xcalacoco on the stretch of Caribbean coast known as Riviera Maya, this is an intimate collection of private guest bungalows in a dramatic setting that weaves together the jungle, the beach and the aesthetics of a style influenced by the culture of the Maya. They call it the Riviera Maya, a two hundred and thirty mile long ribbon of perfect white sand that stretches from Cancun, on the Eastern most point of the Yucatan peninsular, to the border with Belize.
Viceroy Riviera Maya is situated just outside the town of Playa Del Carmen - Yucatan’s version of Saint Tropez. Each guest gets a villa and each villa includes a private plunge pool, outdoor moon showers and a hammock. At just over a thousand square feet in terms of space, they are large enough to feature an outdoor terrace with a day bed and a dining table, but the real sense of space and privacy comes from its magnificent seclusion. Small paths, cut through the tropical forest are the only way to access each individual villa. There is the lounge at La Marea - an indoor outdoor space with ocean views that works as a setting for cocktails and cigars and also hosts regular tequila tastings by the hotel’s tequila maestro (unbeknownst to most, the age and vintage of tequila is taken as seriously in Mexico as its better known counterparts cognac and whiskey). Featuring contemporary fusion interpretations of Mexican and Mayan cuisine (dubbed Mayaterranean), La Marea is parked on the edge of the beach under a thatched roof pavilion traditionally known as a palapa. There is also Antojería - literally a place of little cravings - where traditional Mexican street food such as chalupitas and sopes (corn dough filled with beans and salsa) is offered in an authentic market setting. The view is the reason people come to the Riviera Maya – the stunningly seductive combination of powdery white sand and turquoise water.
