The Whole Story
Urban Zen in the heart of Hong Kong
Natural materials used in a minimal way have created a hotel that is the very embodiment of the Japanese term Wabi – the notion of reducing something down until all superfluous elements have been discarded. Designed by Andre Fu, the Upper House is distinguished throughout by a sophisticated sense of calm, yet it is at the same time distinctly and unmistakably Asian. People who love attention to detail will love this place.
Created from the upper half of an existing tower block in Admiralty, Hong Kong, the unique architecture of the building – with many glass enclosed protruding corners – presented an opportunity for doing something genuinely different in terms of the interior design and architecture.
Limestone, oak, ash, wool, leather, tatami, silk, and other pale, natural materials have been used to create an environment that is calm, sensual and sophisticated. . The rooms are also larger than most hotels, starting at a size of 730 sq ft for rooms described as studios. The substantial window bays also contribute a lot of light and because the hotel starts on the 38th floor the views are impressive. Bathrooms are the size of a normal hotel room, with a rain shower and a freestanding limestone tub.
