The Whole Story
It is difficult not to imagine Joy waking up early in the morning to gaze upon the adjacent watering-hole as lions, elephants and buffalo jostle for space and daily refreshment. This is exactly the view that guests receive when they step foot onto their own private veranda.
The accommodation is the ultimate in tented-luxury and the interior décor pays homage to the surrounding environment and local nomadic tribes. Each of the 10 unique canvas-living spaces has its own en-suite bathroom, large main bedroom and natural viewing area offering the most breathtaking scenery that you can imagine.
We promise that you’ll really begin to feel at one with Kenya, bush walks and spectacular sundownders will make your immersion complete. This is also where Joy raised Penny the leopard, the heroine of her last book, and today, Shaba is still an ideal location to view leopards.
Further cultural activities include visiting a local Boran village and learning more about the work of Joy Adamson at the museum dedicated to her life and work.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a holiday without a dip in the pool or an occasional massage and we’re sure you won’t be disappointed when you see the facilities!
Joy’s Camp is highly involved in the long-term protection and conservation of Shaba National Reserve and its breathtaking wildlife. Local communities are supported through various projects at grass-root level aimed at improving their livelihoods.
The Rooms
Each of the 10 individual tented suites are designed to reflect the natural environment as well as providing the optimum in contemporary living standards. The accommodation is decorated in the Boran/Somali cloth design and includes vibrant fabrics and colourful homemade glass which are typical of the region. You’ll find every effort has been made to ensure your comfort and safety are Priority Number One and the views from your veranda are simply breathtaking. Each tent has its own private en-suite bathroom with cooling stone floors, flush toilet, hot running water and shower. This really is the essence of luxury camping without compromising or impeding on any of the magnificent surrounding area.
