  1. The New Majestic, Singapore

    Singapore, Singapore

At one time in Singapore’s recent history the drive to emerge as Asia’s most modern city state threatened to flatten all traces of its colonial past. Luckily the area now known as Singapore’s Old Chinatown survived largely intact, and these distinctive terraced houses have since become home to some of the city’s hippest clubs and most cutting edge restaurants – an environment where the New Majestic as a hotel is right at home.

The story starts with 1929, a hotel around the corner which Loh Lik Peng opened in 2003, largely to be able to house his burgeoning collection of modern furniture. It broke all the rules and set the benchmark for any newcomers, which in this case was Peng himself, with his second property the New Majestic Hotel. It is bigger, better and more adventurous in terms of creativity.

The New Majestic is a relaxed eclectic and highly artistic alternative to the city’s plethora of strictly business hotels.

    • Every room was created by a different Asian artist or personality so they are anything but predictable. From a practical point of view the artistic inspiration does not get in the way of practical considerations so you’re not sacrificing comfort for creativity.
    • Award winning chef Yong Bing Ngen is at the helm of the Majestic Restaurant, which presents modern Cantonese cuisine with some of Singapore’s best wines.

  2. The Scarlet, Singapore

    Singapore, Singapore

Geeson Lawadinata, a friend of Peng, the proprietor of the New Majestic Hotel chose to go bold and baroque to cater to the night owl who prefers sumptuous overkill to pared down modernism.

Nestled amidst the vibrant Club Street community of specialty shops, boutique spas, trendy restaurants and cafes, wine bars, antiques shops and art galleries, The Scarlet provides a completely different 5-star experience. Historic Erskine Road leads you to an original 1924 Art Deco building, whose architectural detailing have been expertly retained and lovingly restored.

Inside, a variety of textures and colours are matched almost in wilful contradiction, to provide a mood which is dramatic, daring and bold. Ambient lighting evokes a dramatic mood with the creation of contrast between light and dark areas. This sums up the total experience of The Scarlet - unexpected yet welcoming.

Red velvet, gold detailing and lots of shiny black, The Scarlet is a bling version of townhouse chic.

    • A proper space for cocktails - a sexy culmination of gold, black and the odd bit of red.
