    At one time in Singapore’s recent history the drive to emerge as Asia’s most modern city state threatened to flatten all traces of its colonial past. Luckily the area now known as Singapore’s Old Chinatown survived largely intact, and these distinctive terraced houses have since become home to some of the city’s hippest clubs and most cutting edge restaurants – an environment where the New Majestic as a hotel is right at home.

    The story starts with 1929, a hotel around the corner which Loh Lik Peng opened in 2003, largely to be able to house his burgeoning collection of modern furniture. It broke all the rules and set the benchmark for any newcomers, which in this case was Peng himself, with his second property the New Majestic Hotel. It is bigger, better and more adventurous in terms of creativity.
