The Whole Story
It was not mating season for the humpback whales that have made Hermanus one of the most famous beaches in South Africa, yet in the middle of breakfast directly in front of me a young male decided to put on a show. He leapt out of the water porpoise style – except this is no porpoise, this is a mammal the size of a double-decker bus – and then there were a few massive belly flops and a water spout going skyward to signal the end.
It was a defining experience and I don’t care how much you’ve seen in life or how much you may have travelled, a sight like this is memorable with a capital ‘M’. It is undeniably one of the big draw cards of Birkenhead House in Hermanus.
It’s easy to see why people and whales are attracted to the place. Hermanus is a huge natural bay with rolling surf, big beaches, grassy dunes and the odd chunk of volcanic rock standing guard, sticking out of the sand. Birkenhead House has, without a doubt, the best location on the entire beach. Situated at the edge of the surf, it’s the beach hotel of your dreams; warm, welcoming, stylish, with dramatic views all around. Not surprisingly, this hotel started life as a beach house. Originally, it was Liz Biden’s family home in Hermanus. The smaller rooms upstairs are testament to the time that they were the kids’ rooms.
Personally, I can’t imagine ever giving up a house such as this to be converted to a hotel, but I am certainly grateful that they did. How else would I ever have experienced a private whale performance at breakfast.
