Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts and rubber, Sri Lanka boasts a progressive and modern industrial economy and the highest per capita income in South Asia. The natural beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous tourist destination.
For a small island, Sri Lanka has many nicknames: Serendib, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Resplendent Isle, Island of Dharma, and Pearl of the Orient. This colourful collection reveals its richness and beauty, and the intensity of the affection it evokes in its visitors.
The beach thing may be a cliche, but don't miss them. Then head to the hills to cool off amidst tea plantations and ancient cities. The island teems with bird life, and even the occasional elephant or leopard. To top it all off, the people are friendly, the food is delicious and costs are low.

Situated within the walls of the old Dutch trading port of Galle, Amangalla is in the midst of a well preserved colonial town with views of the Indian Ocean and impressive banyan trees that provide shade for children getting ready to go to school in their British era uniforms. In other words, it is in the heart of a beautiful colonial setting that remains charmingly unchanged.
True to past traditions, the bar is wherever you want to have a drink on the ground floor, and the best place of all is the veranda – a perfect spot for lingering over a Singapore/Sri Lankan Sling. The dining room is grand Victorian in style with mahogany, silver and lots of people in pressed linen uniforms
Tucked away in a hidden courtyard, the pool is the hotel’s big surprise - a metaphor for the entire project - a seductive mix of contemporary attitude with a sensitivity to colonial authenticity.
"Without a doubt the most charming and charismatic of all colonial era hotels in Asia".

Set high on a hillside with an idyllic view of the Bay of Galle, this former admiral's house is a particularly attractive example of Dutch colonial architecture in the tropics. The effect is at once terribly grand and surprisingly cosy. Various rooms and spaces are used much as they would have been originally, and the guest experiences something not dissimilar to staying with the admiral himself.
Each of the staterooms is immense and so are the bathrooms. Dutch House also has beautiful gardens, with the recent addition of an infinity pool discreetly tucked away on one side of the estate.
But Dutch House's real draw-card is the seductive pace of the place; you're left with the impression that all the guests have been here for so long that they have completely adjusted to the Sri Lankan way of life - even if they only arrived yesterday.
There's simply nothing else like it in the Orient, and that in itself is reason enough to stay here.
