Situated between Carmel (former mayor, Clint Eastwood) and San Simeon (location of Hearst Castle), Big Sur is on the most picturesque stretch of highway in the USA. Highway 1 is possibly the most famous road in the nation, and this is the portion that earned its reputation. The terrain offers stunning views, Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the lower 48 states, ascending nearly a mile above sea level. North of Carmel the coast flattens out, and south of San Simeon the landscape has been invaded by the suburban towns that keep creeping ever further beyond Los Angeles. But in between, winding its way along the most dramatic cliffs, beaches and ridges of America's Pacific coast, this single-lane strip of Highway 1 is still like the movies –a fantasy road straight out of the Beach Boys' "Surfing USA."

The organic architecture is as adventurous as the location. You approach along a private small mountain road that winds its way through dense forest. A series of Tree House and Ocean House rooms gaze across to the mountains or vast expanse of sea and sky. The Tree House rooms are suspended on timber stilts, a mélange of triangular shapes creating an interior unlike any other. The Ocean House rooms are similarly innovative, virtually buried in the side of the steep slope from which they look out, with roofs covered in topsoil and planted. Fusion of glass, stone, slate and native woods reflects a lifelong commitment to environmentally appropriate design.
