The Whole Story
If there is a standard to The Standard, it is to, whenever possible, break with convention. The Miami Standard has certainly done that. For starters, it’s the only South Beach hotel that’s not on the Atlantic side. Located on Belle Isle, overlooking the waters of Biscayne Bay, five minutes from the beach, the hotel’s waterfront has private boating docks and views of Miami’s sunsets.
And unlike most of the other South Beach hotels, the Standard is not just a scene at night… it’s a scene during the day. The crowd refers to it as Camp Standard, because once you enter through the gates a whole different set of rules apply. The pool is for European sunbathing - the new American way of saying topless and
most of the accommodation is not in hotel rooms, but in Sixties-style cabanas on a stretch of land with the Miami lagoon as its backyard.
This is the first of hotelier Andre Balazs’ Standards to have a spa focus. It breaks from conventional spa experience and instead encourages the communal, shared rituals of bathhouses from the days of ancient Romans, Russians and Turks.
This hotel is about a feeling rather than the size of the pool or the number of teak daybeds in the beach club. It may not be the biggest, shiniest, tallest or most expensive hotel in Miami, but it is certainly the coolest. And although the design certainly got it, it’s not the design that creates the vibe. It’s more the result of an attitude; an attitude that says to be different you have to be different without trying too hard. And therein lies the defining signature of the Standard, in that its cool factor feels natural, effortless and normal. The Standard hotels are consistently fun, imaginative, sexy and unconventional.
