The Whole Story
Situated right in the middle of the Lower East Side, Hotel on Rivington is a study in contrast; a shiny glass and steel tower in a neighbourhood of tenement buildings that used to house the highest density of immigrants in the world.
Dutch enfant terrible Marcel Wanders worked on the public spaces and French designer India Mandavi created the guestrooms. Both were inspired choices.
Four years later, and less than a year after opening, almost all of New York has now heard about the cave at the hotel entrance. What they probably don't know is that this is more than just a grotto. Not too long ago, Wanders created the now notorious egg vase by seeing how many eggs he could squeeze into a condom. The resulting rubber skin with egg bulges was cast as a vase, and Marcel's tunnel at Rivington is a piece of this vase design blown up to Jolly Green Giant size.
The entrance is a hit, the Thor restaurant on the ground floor is consistently voted in New York's top 100 and the rooms are sumptuously spacious. But the real advantage of the hotel came as a surprise to everyone, including the owners. There had never been a tower in this area, so no one knew that the hotel would have such an amazing view: New York's famous skyline from a completely new perspective is a handy bonus for guest and proprietor alike.
