The Whole Story
Even some New Yorkers have trouble with the notion that a loft in TriBeCa is worth more than the Upper East Side. TriBeCa recently became the most expensive area in New York City. It has a lot to do with the lifestyle. TriBeCa is charming, authentic and still has the street-smart sense of hip that the Upper East Side never had. TriBeCa has kept its downtown edge without turning into a shopping mall in the way SoHo has. TriBeCa, or Triangle Below Canal Street, is a collection of warehouses where local restaurants, bars and boutiques have been carefully integrated into local loft-living fabric. Robert De Niro, for one, has been a long term resident and an active member of the neighbourhood. If anyone was going to create the iconic hotel it would be him. From a distance, the Greenwich looks like yet another old building typical of the area, but in truth it was built from scratch. Any building that could have housed a hotel has long since been converted to residential lofts, so De Niro set out to build a hotel that would not look new. Old bricks were used for the façade, hand made glass for the windows, set a precedent for investing in details that perhaps would never be seen. But somehow it still got noticed. With hand-loomed Tibetan silk rugs, Moroccan tiles, oak floors and a lot of books, the Greenwich has the ambience of a discreet members club. Its luxury is the luxury of real comfort.
