The Whole Story
This desert town, framed by the San Jacinto Mountains, has been a magnet for creative and flamboyant individuals since the early 1920s.. Palm Springs has been experiencing a boom that is starting to resemble the one of the 1940s. With such a resurgence it was only a matter of time until the team of LA property developer Brad Korzen and interior designer Kelly Wearstler opened a hotel here. In early 2003 Viceroy Palm Springs joined the ranks of the new-generation Palm Springs hotel destinations. Outside, the design is mid-century inn mixed with California Mission style, So the interior is quite unexpected. Wearstler opted to re-evoke the glamour of Hollywood's golden age.
Viceroy Palm Springs' Hollywood Regency style is a contemporary theatrical version of old European aristocratic decor: lots of chandeliers, formal drapery, Regency-style dining chairs. Guestrooms are sparkling white spaces accented with an oversize Greek key pattern, the odd splash of black-and-white houndstooth, 1960s reproduction Regency armchairs upholstered in bright yellow, whitewashed urns, plaster medallions and white Flokati rugs.
In practically any other setting Hollywood Regency would be a dubious design route, but in Palm Springs it works like a gem. Viceroy Palm Springs’ sixty-five rooms are spread out over a variety of studios, suites and private villas. Wearstler's Hollywood glamour approach has transformed what would otherwise be a collection of architectural non-events into a collage of stylish accommodation options.
Viceroy Palm Springs seems to market itself particularly for weddings, which apparently have become a big thing in Palm Springs in recent years. Perhaps it's because of all the white, but there's also a certain theatricality to this hotel that goes beyond the Hollywood Regency interiors. The hotel grounds, for instance, are landscaped in a Beverly Hills movie mogul manner with three swimming pools (two for adults only), lots of palm trees, plenty of potted topiary, and enough ceramic whippets to fill a kennel. Ink the hands of a designer less confident than Wearstler, all this could so easily be a formula for camp overkill, but she manages to pull it off. Kitsch in the right hands can be a good thing.
