The Whole Story
Nobody would argue that San Francisco is a fun town. It has lots of bars and restaurants, a very famous Chinatown, and a reputation for European-style sophistication that not many American cities can match.
In this city it always seemed natural for a hotel like the W to be a good fit, and in the ten years that it has been open it has been a big hit. Located in a tall, modern building just around the corner from Union Square, it is in the heart of San Francisco’s shopping area, and just next door to the SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art).
When it first opened, the interior was a combination of dark timber and white walls – modern but sober. Recently, the hotel has had an update, and the new décor is all about colour. Different shades of blue, the odd splash of pink and green, and Chinese shapes cut out of mirrored glass. The new guest rooms are light and fanciful, and in sync with Northern Californian sunshine.
It’s not the new décor however that makes the W such an attractive place to stay. Rather, it’s the ambience. There’s a snappy lively pace to the place, people are constantly on the move – for a quick coffee at the bar downstairs or breakfast in the restaurant, or some work on a laptop in the Adirondack chairs in the building’s outside foyer. This is not a place if you like quiet, hushed tones and whispering. The W in San Francisco has a real buzz, just like the city itself.
